Surrender

Surrender is not passive. Surrender is power.
Sharanagati - the act of complete surrender.

Aatman - consciousness/infinite dimension within us. Also looked at as God. God is the only truth that is limitless, beyond any boundaries. (higher self, consciousness, etc.)

The Charama Sloka: abandon all dharmas, take refuge in me alone and I will take you from all nonsense. Do not grieve. This may sound reckless on the surface level. How can we surrender all responsibility? God is not saying to run away from responsibility/work. He is teaching the true meaning of surrender. Give up the false notion that I am doing something.

The dimension of our own being that is beyond all forms and limitations. There is the ego/body/mind/lower-self/identity. At the same time you have a deeper dimension which is consciousness. This is the conversation between your lower self and your higher self. Give up the ego's attachments to the outcomes, ego's sense of doer-ship, to the higher self. "I am doing this, I am speaking, listening, etc." The sense of me doing things leads to bondage/limitation/karma - we have to experience the outcomes of our actions.

The way out is surrender. It is not giving up and becoming small. It is becoming infinite, expansion from the lower self to the higher self. Becoming one with the higher self and accessing the grace and true support of this higher consciousness.

Your relationship with God/the Divine gives you a sense of clarity and freedom. It can happen through surrender. It removes all forms of attachment, anxiety, etc. You feel lighthearted. As long as we are conscious we can develop the skill of surrender to the higher self moment to moment. Surrendering the doer-ship. Stop believing it is you who are doing things and surrender your entire self to God, divine. Surrender is not passiveness. You are not surrendering your actions and responsibilities. You are actively surrendering the sense that you are the one doing things. "Abandon all dharma and surrender to me." It is our choice.

Why would you act from the lower self of limited power, limited potential when you can act from the higher self? Take refuge in me alone and I will liberate you from all sins. Life becomes extremely easy and effortless in this surrender.

All forms of suffering are held in place by resistance. Allow the feeling and drop the inner posture of resistance. The moment resistance stops the feeling has nothing to hold on to.

  1. Viveka - a quality we need to develop. Looking at reality with a clear perspective.
  2. Neti Neti - not this, not this. When we remove everything that we are not, we find what we are. (I am not my emotions, my job, my circumstances, etc.)
  3. Sakshi - the witness. We silently see reality for what it is.

Close your eyes and allow yourself to feel wherever you are holding tension in your body. Allow yourself to feel that tension and any emotion you are resisting. Take a moment to fully embrace that tension and feeling throughout your whole body - completely/totally embracing it.

Now, let it go. Completely surrender it. Feel the peace and calm come over you as you let go of that tension, taking a deep breath.

Now open your eyes and be "the witness." Seeing reality for exactly what it is and catching a glimpse of the infinite peace that surpasses all understanding.
